Character limit in Broadcast Emails, Text Fields (Long Description and Standard), Read Only Text Blocks and Field Names (word limit)

No character limit for Long Description and ROTB Fields

As of 2023, the 4000 character limit for Long Description fields and Read Only Text Blocks has been removed.

Word Limit versus Character Limit - what's the difference?

Some EdSmart fields have pre-defined size/capacity. Sometimes this is incorrectly described as a word limit. However, word lengths vary, so we use character limit to describe the capacity of a field in EdSmart.

Sometimes you will find the text you have used seems to contain fewer characters than the specified limit, but has been truncated anyway. The most likely cause are 'hidden' formatting characters. This can be an issue if you have copied and pasted text form a word processing tool, such as MS Word. Stripping the formatting from your text (e.g. NotePad, or TextEdit) before pasting it into the field should resolve the issue.

Character limit for a Text Field

A standard Text Field has a 250 character limit. Remember, that also includes any spaces or formatting characters.

Character limit in a Broadcast Email

You now have the ability to track how many characters have been entered in your Email Broadcasts. Once you have entered about 1000 characters, a visual progress indicator will populate above the field. When you approach about 80% of the character limit, the indicator will display yellow, and when it reaches 90% it will turn red to warn you that you are almost at capacity.

The technical limit is around 100 000 characters, but would you really want to read an email with that many characters?

Character limit in Field Names

The Field Name field has a limit of 364 characters

You may type as much as you want, but any excess text will be cut off after you save it. If you use the supported HTML code for bold, underline or italics, that will also count towards the 364 character limit.
