Text Field Validations - Templates/Slips/Forms

With EdSmart’s Text Field, you can specify what type of data should be entered into the field.

There are 12 options including email, street address, number and time formats.

They are described in more detail below, listed in the order they appear in the Validation drop-down menu.

  • No Validation - the default.

    • Any character/s can be entered into the field.

  • Email address

    • This validation scans the entered text for email address formatting.

    • It generates a warning prompt if an email address isn’t detected when the person moves to another Field, or tries to submit the Form/Slip.

  • Street address (Australia)

    • This validation allows the person filling in the Form or Slip to start typing an Australian street address and have it auto-complete when a match is found in Geoscape Australia’s database.

  • Is a number

    • This validation scans the entered information for numerals.

    • It generates a warning prompt if a valid number isn’t detected when the person filling it in moves to another Field, or tries to submit the Form/Slip.

  • Is a number with minimum number value

    • This allows you to specify a minimum value (whole numbers only) for the field.

    • Negative integers can also be set as your minimum value.

    • The values actually entered into the field do not have to be integers.

    • If a number is entered that is less than the set minimum, the person will be prompted to enter a value equal to or greater than your specified minimum.

  • Is a number with maximum number value

    • This allows you to specify a maximum value (must be an integer, can be negative) for the field.

    • If a number is entered that exceeds the set maximum, the person will be prompted to enter a value equal to or less than your specified maximum.

    • Whilst the Validation maximum must be an integer, the values actually entered can be decimals.

  • Is a number in value range

    • With this setting, everyone must enter a number (can be a decimal) within the range set, otherwise, they will see a prompt to enter a number within the range you’ve specified.

    • The pre-set maximum and minimum values must be integers (positive and/or negative).

  • Minimum characters length

    • This validation checks the number of characters entered and generates a prompts if the minimum isn’t met.

    • The minimum value you can specify here is seven characters.

      • Remember: blank spaces between symbols are counted as characters, too.

  • Maximum characters length

    • This validation checks the number of characters entered and generates a prompts if the maximum is exceeded.

      • Remember: There is a hard maximum for a Text Field of 255 characters, and blank spaces between symbols count as characters, too.
